Functional objects and fine art, shaped like potted plants and painted with the fynbos that covers our mountains and plains.

Ceramic smoking art Original designs Western Cape, ZA
a sculptor at heart

Fynbongs began with an artist who moved to the Western Cape to further his education and his art. Living among the fynbos, with its richness, its delicate structures and its place in South African heritage, sparked an idea: objects that carry a small piece of that landscape into the home.

With a practice rooted in sculpture, intricate design and hands-on making, his work has always been driven by an appreciation for material, detail and craftsmanship.

The brand’s foundations were built with fellow artists and makers: a place where artistic integrity, shared creativity and South African identity live alongside functional design.

Shaped like a potted plant.

More than something you pull out when it’s time for a smoke. Each piece is made to live in your space, enjoyed and appreciated as an artwork in its own right: a small piece of South African nature and heritage at home.

Painted from the veld.

Every brand Johan builds takes its colours from its work. Fynbongs is drawn from Vachellia blossom, fynbos green and the terracotta of the pot, and so is this whole page.

Rooted in collaboration.

Fynbongs is an independent brand, but it was never built alone. Its foundations came from fellow artists and makers, and the door stays open: artists who want to bring their own style to a Fynbongs piece can pitch a collab.
